Josh Smith is hitting .206/.333/.235 since returning to AAA, and six of his nine games have occurred in Reno or Albuquerque. Much of the underlying Statcast data is underwhelming, but then, that’s almost always been the case. Smith has never hit the ball especially hard, instead relying on swing decisions and angles to make his case.
Texas signed 28-year-old lefty Anthony Veneziano, who was a Ranger briefly before heading off to Korea (without much success).

Sebastian Walcott had four hits. Watch ’em all, plus Walcott swiping a base off top San Diego prospect Ethan Salas.
Cody Bradford was in fine form. With a little more defensive help, he could have completed four on that same number of pitches, but no matter. (The defense wasn’t bad, just a few near-misses on some opportunities.) I’m sure there’s always room for refinement, but in general he appears to lack nothing but stamina, and how much of that he needs will depend on his role.
Also in form was Aidan Curry, who fanned “only” six but had 16 whiffs, near his season high. Curry dealt a mid-90s fastball, upper-80s cutter, mid-80s slider and mid-70s curve. I didn’t see a change, but I didn’t see every pitch.

Scarborough resumed normal activity after a briefer post-ASB start and tied a season-high 16 swinging strikes. Three of the six strikeouts required only three pitches.

Mason McConnaughey invoked the spirit of former Ranger Bob Tewksbury, who had a better-than-average ERA despite fanning only 53 batted in 129 innings in 1995. Neither team scored until the extra 8th inning. Representing the tying run, Jay McQueen singled with one out and reached third on a passed ball and Santana single, but he would move no farther.
