ZION NATIONAL PARK, UTAH Zion was ther last major stop on my western road trip of 1999. As you'll see, the foliage is beatiful this time of year. I personally prefer Arches and Canyonlands, if only for their strangeness and starkness. Zion is more conventional, if you could call a sheer, eight-hundred-feet deep canyon conventional. The weather was quite pleasant: upper 70s during the
day, 40s at night. I've read that southwest Utah is the state's version
of Dixie, where the mild climate provides a respite from the harsh winters
that afflict the rest of the state. |

| The trail leading to the Narrows, a lengthy trail following the creek between the canyon walls. In several places, hikers must enter water that's at least waist-deep. It's most popular in the summer. Since I was here in November, I declined to enter the water. |
