UTAH I don't have many photos in this section. Most of my photo adventures in Utah were in national parks, each of which has its own section. These shots are from a road trip in May 2001. I have a few others from 1999 that I might add later. |
The first four shots are along a loop that climbs from north of Moab through the La Sal Mountains before depositing you south of Moab. The first twenty-or-so miles wind along the Colorado River, then the road climbs into the mountains. The green scenery and cooler temperatures are a nice diversion from the hotter, redder surroundings.

Capitol Reef National Park, located in south-central Utah. In May 2001, my girlfriend and I had intended to camp there, but we arrived mid-afternoon and the campsites were full. The camp was pretty but offered less seclusion than Arches (which I'd visited in 1999). We decided to explore the park until darkness, then drive to Moab to grab a campsite at Arches. The sky was overcast and unusually hazy, so I left the park under-explored as well as under-photographed. I plan to go back someday.
The first shot was taken from the edge of a canyon ledge. I'd guess the drop was about 500 feet. As I took the lenscap off my lens, a huge gust of wind blew it out of my hands and down into the canyon. I thought for a moment that I would follow it. Would've been an inconvenience to my girlfriend, especially since I had the car keys.
