CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK, UTAH 16-19 May 2001 Unlike Island in the Sky, the Needles is not a worthwhile visit unless you're willing to ditch your car and hike... and hike. Needles is 60 miles from the nearest town of any size and 100 miles from Moab, and it receives far fewer visitors than Arches, Island, or any other National Park in Utah other than the Mazes District of Canyonlands. It's a great place to camp and explore in relative seclusion. |

The first three shots are of the Confluence Overlook, which (amazingly enough) overlooks the confluence of the Colorado and Green rivers. The Overlook is approximately 1,000 feet above the rivers. The last shot is along the Overlook Trail, a 12-mile hike that becomes pretty strenuous when carrying photographic equipment and almost a gallon of water.

Views along the Slickrock Trail, a relatively easy 4.5 mile trail with views of needle-like spires, after which the district is named, as well as the distant La Sal Mountains.
