LOUISIANA In October 1999, I took the less-traveled route from
Austin to Atlanta. In Louisiana, I drive along State Highway 82, which
edges the southern coast until you're forced to turn north toward Lafayette.
Much of the road sits atop a levy with waterways to either side. The
area features countless levies, miles of vacant coastline, endless swamps,
insects the size of pigeons, and a near absence of people. |

| This bridge leads from Port Arthur over the Intracoastal Waterway. Technically, it's in Texas. Louisiana is about two miles to the east. But I took this picture the same day as the others on this page and it fits in. (39k) | |
| Ships on the Calcasieu River about three miles north of the Gulf. A ferry provides the only crossing south of Lake Charles, 55 miles to the north. The ferry was a twenty minute wait and took fifteen more minutes to cross the river, but it beats making a 120 mile loop around Calcasieu Bay. (31k) | |
| A man fishing on the Calcasieu River. I hope he was fishing for sport and not for food. The water is somewhat less than pristine. (20k) | |
