LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA While on my western road trip in 1999, I drove the old alignment of Route 66 through California and visited a friend in Los Angeles. I didn't come to LA to take pictures, and the weather was gloomy much of the time, so I don't have much to offer on this page. LA is wonderful and fascinating to visit, and I wouldn't live here for anything. Five million cars and no protected left-turn signals. Metered parking in front of apartment complexes. $7 well drinks. An air of anxiety and desperation. On the other hand, Venice was cool. The Getty Center was great. Plenty of good, healthy food. Friendly cats. I had a great time, but after four days, I left the
chaos and noise to visit that bastion of restraint and civility, Las
Vegas. |

| A sepia-tone print? No. This is an unretouched color photo of midday, downtown Los Angeles taken from Griffith Park. Makes you want to move here, doesn't it? (24k) | |
| I know, condemning L.A. for its downtown air quality is a cheap shot. In the spirit of fair play, here's another view from Griffith Park looking west toward Santa Monica and the coast. You can almost smell the sea air. (20k) | |
| The Getty Center, located northwest of Los Angeles along I-405. Features botanical gardens, paintings, sculptures, photography exhibits, and so on. A must-see. (57k) | |

| And, one more of the Getty Center. (53k) | |
